AACE METRIX: Helping FIFO Workers Overcome Addiction

METRIX is an intensive non-residential treatment for addiction. The program requires participants to remain abstinent for 48 weeks to complete the program. METRIX involves a combination of evidence based therapies to provide participants with tools, skills, and support to master their life without relying on a substance to cope.

METRIX recognises the challenges of Fly-In, Fly-Out (FIFO) work rosters, which is why we offer a flexible approach tailored for individuals with such schedules. The program is designed to help individuals receive treatment for addiction while continuing to work. The schedule is adaptable to various FIFO rosters, ensuring that participants can complete the program regardless of their work demands.

Participants and their family are supported through the journey of recovery by a team of registered allied health practitioners under the guidance of Clinical Psychologist, Kerryn Ashford-Hatherly and Clinical Nurse and Addiction Specialist, Heather Marrapodi.

How it Works

The METRIX’S FIFO schedule best fits rosters which provide an even on/off time (eg: 1/1, 2/2) the 8/6 day roster or a 2/1 roster. When an employer refers a worker to our treatment program, we have the worker sign a release form so we can keep the employer updated regarding the worker’s attendance. This assists safety for both the worker and the employer.

METRIX combines group sessions, individual sessions, and self-study through handouts for the times when they are away on site. The program is divided into three phases - intensive, maintenance, and transition - each with varying session frequencies and fees.

During their R&R, METRIX requires participants to complete a minimum of 3 sessions a week while in the intensive phase as well as an individual session before they fly back to site. Group sessions are 2 hours in duration and they are held 6 days a week. When attending a session participants are subjected to random urine testing.

Before returning to site the FIFO participant is provided with homework to complete whilst onsite. They have access to a METRIX clinician should they need support whilst onsite and intensive planning goes in to place to ensure critical risk periods are managed.

Once a week Family and Support sessions involve the person in recovery attending with their nominated family or support person. Whilst the person in recovery is onsite their family member or support person is still welcome to attend the family and support sessions.

The WA METRIX program currently has FIFO and remote residential workers in the program, who have either self-referred or joined as part of their return to work program.

The program in WA is not government funded and requires payment of fees for attendance in the program for the duration of their recovery.

Completion of the program requires the participant to be 48 weeks abstinent.
